Year 7 Admissions

See our Prospectus for information about the school.

Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys complies with the Co-ordinated Admission Scheme which is administered by Kent County Council.  To be considered for a place at the normal point of entry to the school (Year 7) boys must have gained a selective assessment through the Kent Process for Entry to Secondary Education and named the school on their Kent Secondary Common Application Form.  Once the school have confirmed that those seeking a place have met the entry requirement to the school, all children who name the school are ranked in accordance with the oversubscription criteria.  Details of the Kent PESE are available from Admissions at Kent County Council.  There is no guarantee of a place to applicants if the school is oversubscribed.

The Published Admissions Number (PAN) in Y7 is 150. The school is currently oversubscribed in all year groups.

Our Admissions Policy and Oversubscription policy can be found HERE.

For admission enquiries please email:  admissions@thelangton.kent.sch.uk

If you name this school as one of your preferences on the SCAF but are unsuccessful in gaining a place for your child you have the right to appeal against this decision.

If you wish to exercise this right you must complete the Appeal Form here and send it to the school, marked for the attention of The Admissions Officer (admissions@thelangton.kent.sch.uk)  before the published deadline.   Appeals lodged after this deadline will be heard within 40 school days of the appeals deadline or 30 school days of being lodged, whichever is the later date.

2025/26 appeals will be held in the week commencing Tuesday 6th May 2025.  All appellants will be sent written notice of the date of their appeal at least 10 school days in advance of the hearing, unless they have waived this right. If an appellant fails to attend or is unable to attend, but it is impractical to offer an alternative date, the appeal will go ahead and be decided on the written information supplied by them.

If you would like some general guidance on the appeal process please email admissions@thelangton.kent.sch.uk

An explanation of School Roll Numbers

The school has a published admission number of 150 which means that once 150 places have been allocated the school is full.  The school will not offer more than 150 places in year 7.  This admission number equates to five forms of 30 students and to admit additional children may be prejudicial to the effective provision of education.  Only in exceptional circumstances may the school admit more children, for example, where an appeal has been upheld or where the Local Authority has applied its additional powers in relation to children in care or where a fair access decision has been taken in line with the School Admissions Code.

When a place becomes available in the school, it will be offered to the child at the top of the waiting list.  The school would expect the place to be taken up immediately.  If not, it may be offered to the next child on the waiting list.  In some circumstances, if it becomes available close to the end of term, then arrangements may be agreed for a start at the beginning of the next school term, to avoid disruption to education.

Where students have not met the entry requirements through PESE the school cannot offer a place regardless of the numbers in the Year group.Where a place is refused on these grounds parents would have the right to lodge an appeal against the decision not to admit.  Under these circumstances the appeal panel may look to the parents to provide evidence that the test results did not accurately reflect academic ability.  The school would expect a panel to be entirely satisfied by the evidence presented that the child has the academic ability to enable him to successfully integrate into the school and keep pace with the lessons at the school.

It should be noted that:

In the past 12 years no appeal panel has ever instructed the school to make an offer of admission when the student in question achieved significantly low marks in the entrance tests.

In year admission to the school can be made directly, the school will make the necessary arrangements to test any boys seeking a place and the outcome of any testing will be provided prior to any appeal being heard.

Admission into Year 10

In most circumstances boys would not benefit from joining the school in Year 10.  This is because Langton students start their GCSE syllabuses in Year 9+ and boys joining after that time would be significantly disadvantaged and required to spend a lot of time on private study during evenings, weekends and holidays be working at the level of their peers.

Admission into Year 11

For similar reasons stated above, parents seeking a Year 11 place should make appropriate enquiries as to the suitability of the curriculum offer available.
