Rowlyn Isaf has been the school’s home in North Wales since the mid-1960s. Nestled in the hills of Snowdonia, this secluded and ancient farm and farmhouse is the base for our Year 9 and 10 week-long outward-bound visits. Typically, a week here will include navigation exercises in the hills, plus industrial archaeology in the local slate mines, leading on to high level scrambling and climbing on Tryfan and Snowdon under the supervision of qualified mountain guides.
The cottage has no running water or electricity and so the community has to work together on all aspects of managing a small household, cooking the communal meal, cleaning, chopping logs in the woodstore and ending up sitting around the fire chatting through the day’s challenges and events.
Resilience and fortitude are developed, boys are challenged to stretch themselves physically, to think through navigation routes and nurture good fellowship. The week is a full-on experience, subject to all the whims of the Welsh weather, but it is character forming and boys typically come back stronger and prouder of themselves and their achievements.
New friendships are made that last a lifetime. Challenges are remembered forever. Rowlyn is a truly unique Langton experience.
