The Arts & Humanities Society

The Arts and Humanities Society is an after-school society jointly run by staff and students. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The society hosts guest speakers up to twice a week on any subject within the arts and humanities, broadly conceived.  The society attracts upwards of 20 students each session.

Past topics have included:

o   Madness and Van Gogh

o   Alexander the Great

o   Modernism

o   Just War theory

o   American Slavery

o   Wittgenstein

o   Hitler

o   Shakespeare

o   The development of the human mind

The society meets at 4.00 pm in Room E30 (or, occasionally in the Star Centre) and every session is catered.  Over the next academic year we are hoping to attract new guest speakers from further afield and to welcome back guests from our local area and from within our schools’ faculty and alumni.  We are also keen to attract students from other schools in the Canterbury area.

We would encourage all students studying at Key Stages 4 or 5 to come to some of  our meetings and to join our Facebook group, http://www.facebook.com/groups/artsandhumanitiessoc/ designed as an after-hours forum for debate and discussion.  The society is an opportunity to reach across and beyond rigid curriculum boundaries with the help of expert guidance and to debate and discuss ideas with like-minded peers away from the pressures of formal classroom learning.

After two successful years we are looking for a new generation of Langtonians to help the society to go from strength to strength.
